19th Century

Chinese zitan wood ink well, with gold flecks throughout the natural graining. The top is carved with geometric patterns and two wells for ink. The opposite side is hand carved with calligraphy inscription.

A rare and beautiful, flattened form bamboo box with cover, probably used as a seal paste or brush washer. It is carved out from the root part of bamboo and nicely polished. Inside the lid a compass (no longer functioning). Qing, 18–19th cent. H 3 cm, D 7,5 cm. Condition: Over-all fine, and really good, old patina, but with small chip to lid.

Massive late Qing dynasty Chinese ancestor portrait executed in ink and color on paper depicting a civil official seated on a draped armchair over a floral rug decorated with Buddhist swastikas and dressed in formal attire. A Mandarin rank badge showing the official’s rank in the civil bureaucracy is on the center front of his cobalt-blue fur surcoat. The bird appears to be a silver pheasant, indicating an official of the 5th rank...

Antique Chinese ruyi scepter made of hardwood and three carved sections of white jade. The upper section is carved with a scene of two boys and an elephant. The middle section of jade is carved with two boys holding a large vase with flowers. The bottom piece of jade is carved with three recumbent goats, one of which holds in his mouth a curved and swirling ruyi mushroom. The scepter sits on a custom silk covered base which then sits on a carved rectangular hardwood stand...

Chinese Qing dynasty natural root form scholar’s bitong, or brushpot. 7 1/2” high. The base measures about 6” diameter at the longest part. The rim is about 4 5/8” across at the widest part. Late 19th to early 20th century. Very good overall condition. There is a short crack at the inner rim that extends to the interior of one thin concave area on the exterior. This piece is from the private collection of former American expatriates to Hong Kong in the 1970s and 1980s.

The stone has a lustrous patina and has a very dramatic ‘splash’ of red on both sides. It has never been carved with a designation and the base has now a shallow flake as a result of an impact on the edge, with a little powdery material showing. Further along there is a tiny bruise to the edge. These could be taken out by reducing the length by 0.4cm. Personally the chip does not worry me...

Pair of matched naturally stressed wooden plaques with “couplet”, encouraging harmony and peace. Traditionally Chinese write to right to left so the meaning of the board on the right encourages one to “admit your mistakes to avoid trouble in the world” while the one on the left, encourages one to “be tolerant, to live in peace”. It has been suggested to me that these may be have been hung in an old Kung Fu studio as this would express the spirit of martial arts...

A Chinese small box made of zitan wood on the walls and huanghuali wood on the bottom. A very thinly carved jade cover decorated with a picture on top depicting a scholar holds a lotus flower walking under a pine tree in a rocky mountain. Condition: age cracks on wood; there are multiple long cracks and chips on the jade cover. Please study photos carefully for condition details. Additional photos will be provided upon request. A pair of small bronze foo dogs or foo lions created by the lost-wax casting process, showing traces from the mold. Both have a wonderful warm patina and would make excellent brush rests for a calligrapher's or artist's detail brushes. In excellent condition, they measure about 2" long x 1.5 inches high.

A beautiful painting was done by the famous painter Su Turn-Jau.
It was kept very well in good condition and was newly framed.

A very rare and unusual large Chinese scroll painting done in the Japanese style of a bird in a cage with a bamboo tree and netting. Some gold leaf work on the leaves. The wooden weight on the bottom of the scroll has carved bone tips. Comes with original signed box. Age: 19th century. Size: L.213.5cm. W.44cm. Condition: Very good. No repairs.
