These were a favorite of any good scholar who would place his small objects of miniature toggles, snuff bottles, jades, etc. The design is simple, streamlined and clean; which is a feature of the late 18th to early 19th. Often zitan lacked excessive carving, due its natural beauty which never required a coat of lacquer. The wood is in excellent condition and has a very natural dark patina that only comes with time...

It has been ornately carved with lingzhi mushrooms on the head and running down the curved handle, which ends in a gnarled root form. High quality carve work. Beautiful distinctive grain of zitan wood.

The Zitan bed platform rests soundly on all four inverted horse hoof legs. Mortise corners frame the woven bamboo rattan seat cover. The boat appears to be made of an ancient, gnarled tree sprouting flowers, with its canopy of leaves covering the passengers underneath. The 3 male immortal figures sit huddled closely around a lingzhi mushroom, which holds medicinal properties and is a symbol of longevity. One female immortal peers into the waters at the side of the boat with bottles of medicine at her side...
