A beautiful and entirely hand painted mille fleur (Thousand flower) Japanese satsuma bowl of exceptional quality and brightly painted flowers, no two bowls were exactly alike, each is an individual work of art. The bowl was produced by the Kushida company in the very early Tashio period, pre-1920. This is a fine early Japanese Satsuma vase. It was made before 1900 and is one of the better examples I have seen from this artist.. The enamel work and relief dragon are done very well. The vase is interesting and has a lot of character. It is very heavy and in very good condition. The only real flaw is a broken horn on the dragon which is a common occurrence with these pieces. This can be fixed fairly easily and I could arrange for this small repair for the buyer. Stands 9 1/2 inches tall.

An antique okinawan incense container decorated with a lacquer and inlayed mother of pearl depicting a dragon appearing from clouds. Circa 19th Century. Mother-of-pearl inlay, which is known Raden in Japan was first introduced to Japan during Nara period (710-784). The technique was popularly used with lacquer for artworks such as instruments. A Fukagawa porcelain 11 3/4 inch long covered tureen. Iris decoration from Chuji Fukagawa's own 19th century design book. Blue underglaze and red, yellow and gold overglaze enamel decoration including butterflys inside the cover. Mt. Fuji mark inside the foot ring and Mt Fuji with Fukagawa Sei inside the cover. Japanese lacquered tray with the view of Tagonoura and Mt. Fuji with various Japanese motifs surrounding the image. Taka makie is used to create the effect on Mt. Fuji and hira makie is used to paint the motifs surrounding the landscape. On the bottom is the name of the studio: Sato. Age: Late 19th to early 20th century. A letter open done in mixed metal with motif of cranes, chrysanthemums, magnolia-like flowers, and other flowering plants. The letter opener contains a signature that is difficult to read. Age: Meiji Period. Size: Length 13" Width 1.5"

Antique Japanese shinto mirror, tenka ichi. This mirror has a tassle tied through a turtle. The central motif is of a turtle over bamboo meeting the beaks of two cranes. The birds and turtle are on a beach with pine trees and bamboo bushes. This mirror would have been placed along with three others at the entrance to a shrine for those entering to see their reflection as they entered. Made of bronze, Edo period (c1800).
It measures 4 5/8" by 1/2" deep.

Antique Japanese shinto shrine mirror. The mirror has a central motif of a turtle meeting the beaks of two cranes. Three baby cranes and a small turtle walk along the beach. The three auspicious symbols of pine, bamboo, and plum blossoms invoke the island of longevity, horaisan. There is an inscription to ward off calamities. This mirror would have been placed on a wooden stand at the entrance to a shinto shrine for the visitor to see their reflection as they entered. Edo period, (c1800)...

DESCRIPTION: A Japanese Sumida vase with round neck covered in a rich, thick flambé glaze running to the shoulders, with a high relief figure of a monkey balanced on a rocky ledge. In his right hand the monkey holds a peach (symbol of longevity) he has pulled from a green vase; these are all contrasted against the ribbed red body of the vase. Excellent condition with no chips; signed "Ryosai" on the base...

Japanese Imari Porcelain Black Ship and Namban design Bowl and Cover, 3 1/4" high & 5 1/8" diameter-with cover, 2 1/4" high & 4 3/4" diameter-bowl, later part of 1800's Meiji period, with overglaze decoration of six(6) Dutchmen and black ship in iron red background, highlighted in gold. Underglaze blue decoration of diaper pattern borders inside the bowl and under the lid, floral decoration on the bottom and the cover. The condition is good, no damage or restoration.

'Remote Landscape' by Tanomura Chokunyu (1814~1907)

Chokunyu was the step son of Tanomura Chikuden and he studied Chikuden's work. Chokunyu started to learn from Chikuden when he was 9 years old, and Chikuden found his talent and adopted him. Chokunyu learned Confucianism from Tsunoda Kyuka and Chinese poetry from Hirose Gyokuso. He also learned and got skills of Omotesenke Tea Ceremony, Kodo (Japanese art of appreciating incence) and Kenjutsu (the art of the sword)...

This beautiful chawan (tea bowl) was made in the oribe style, a more than four hundred year old tradition from the central part of Japan in the ancient Mino province.

That tradition was in part influenced by tea master and warrior Furuta Oribe (1545-1615) who developed his own style of tea ceremony. The bowl is very well made and in perfect condition. It dates from the mid Edo Period and has no repairs or damages except inborn kiln cracks...
