Antique Japanese bronze usubata in the shape of a boat. Held up by little waves, it seems to float along on the water. Made for ikebana flower arranging. Signature on the bottom in a raised cartouche.

Ivory netsuke depicting Chokaro clinging to the pumpkin from which the head of a horse emerges. The subject represents the miniature horse of Chōkarō 張果老. It refers to the legend of Chōkarō Sennin, an immortal being who owns a horse that he can summon as if by magic from a pumpkin if necessary. In Japanese there is a saying “hyōtan kara koma”, “horse appearing from a pumpkin”...

Silver ray-skin texture covers this fabulous Katakuchi sake pot by Ichikawa Toru enclosed in the original signed wooden box. OMG a chilled Daiginjo served with this would have to taste like a million bucks! Like a footed softball, it is 12 cm (4-3/4 inches) diameter, ever so slightly shorter although it appears to be taller than it is wide.
One of my favorite artists, the innovative Ichikawa Toru was born in Tokyo in 1973...

Antique Japanese black lacquer box, with makie (sprinkled gold powder) designs on its top and sides. The lid shows an open book with images of bamboo and flying sparrows and a scroll with raised images of leaves and foliage, and its sides have other auspicious maki-e elements such as butterflies and flowers...

Wonderful large cast Iron Kama Tetsubin. Lid is iron with lovely round flower motif on top. Tokugawa Crest of Paulownia Flowers decorate both sides of kettle. Antique Japanese velvet painting "Yuzen Birodo". It is a beautiful image of Mount Fuji with a small town on a lake, the foreground is full of water lilies. It bears a seal in the bottom right of the image. Yuzen Birodo or velvet painting was a technique made popular during the 17th century. The artist would work using a special process of dying where the image is created in the weave of the fabric thus creating an image of rich colors...

No longer in existence, the Kahara kiln of Nagasaki—where this tea bowl was crafted—operated from the early to mid Imari period (roughly 1624 - 1671).

A magnificent composite, this piece was excavated from the kiln grounds and repaired using boldly applied silver joinery (gintsugi)...

Antique Japanese small ko tansu (chest for personal use). Made all of kiri wood. 7 drawers of various size, each with a bronze hirute shaped drawer pull. Two of the drawers have round lock plates. Nice overall patina.

An accordion album featuring calligraphy and paintings by various well known Zen priests of the first half of the 20th century. Including the opening there are 30 pages. The book is 22 x 31 cm and in overall fine condition. The opening pages are by Kutsu Deiryu (Izawa Kanshu 1895-1954, head priest of Kaiseiji), the famous protégé of Nakahara Nantenbo.
