An interesting Japanese puppet head of an old woman used in Bunraku, the traditional puppet theater developed in the Edo period by Uemura Bunrakuken, which the name of the puppet theater was derived from. The puppet consists of several moving parts. The head and neck are two separate pieces that move up and down. The bar on the bottom assist the puppet master to move the head in various ways and the rope as a lever. Age: 19th century. Size: Height: 11" Width: 7" Length: 4"

A sublime square japanese export table decorated with scrolling clouds, flora, and rising dragons. The intricate and detailed carvings were popular during the Meiji period when most of Japan's fine arts and crafts were being exported to the West. Samurai Helmet depicted respectfully displayed on the stand. Painted on silk with ink and kindei, which is gold pigments. The kabuto was an important part of the equipment of the samurai, and played a symbolic role as well, which may explain the Japanese expressions, sayings and codes related to them. This is a very nice Meiji vase from Meizan. It has excellent gold detail and enameling. It is even finished off at the inner top rim area with fine white enamel beads. The work rivals that from the Yabu Meizan factory and it is believed that some of the Meizan artists went on to work for Yabu Meizan. This beautiful 5 inch piece has slight wear to the gold but overall is in outstanding condition.

Japanese keyaki wood tansu originating from the Yamagata region of Japan, with a black lacquer frame, iron hardware, lockplates incised with flora, and a side locking hinged door with a center kan pull mounted on flower plating. Antique Japanese gyosho bako, or merchant's box, with iron rings and a smoothed carved indentation on one side so that it may be carried comfortably on a person's back. It has an interesting signature branded on its front door, and its side has the branded mark of a trio of leaves. The front door locks closed, and opens with a kan (ring) pull to an interior with four long drawers. Kanji seal, Edo Age c1800. Size: 19.5" height, 14.25" front to back, 5.75" width

Beautifully aged Antique Japanese Zushi (portable shrine) black lacquered wood with mokko shaped roof. Shrine models a gilt interior with the statue of sitting Buddha. The double doors decorated with crests of the Samurai Clan, Hosogawa in gilt metal work.

Japanese antique doll of a Noh theatre actor in the costume of Ko-Omote the beautiful young woman, dressed in a summer robe with gold flower basket on back, elaborate headress, removable mask reveals the face of the actor. Real gold leaf was used in the Kimono design. Late Meiji/Taisho Period (1900-1915)

This is a very attractive Vintage Japanese cloisonne vase designed with a contemporary style or deco look. We have never seen another like it. The vase is rather large and is signed Sato. It stands 7 1/2 tall and is 8 1/2 inches wide. It is in excellent condition with only a little pitting on the bottom rim. This is probably the finest cloisonne example we have seen produced from this company.

Antique Japanese two-section kiri (paulownia) wood issho tansu, or clothing chest. Has a dramatic woodgrain and original finish. Adorned with spade-shaped iron locks and warabite handles. Antique Japanese kannon biraki tansu, made with keyaki (elm) and hinoki (cypress) wood. Interior has four storage compartments. Top and sides have the same kanji marking burned into the wood. Beautiful, original finish. Very unusual. Size: 25.75" height, 23" length, 10" depth

Antique Japanese large carved wooden tray, natural form and curled edges reminiscent of a lotus leaf, beautifully sculptured, late Meiji/early Taisho Period. Size: 24 1/2" wide x 15 1/2" wide x 1" deep.

Dating from early-to-mid Edo the shape of this unique Karatsu piece is referred to as a “takadai-zara” in Japanese, or high-footed serving platter. Modeled on similar Korean pieces from the early Joseon Dynasty, the platter was made using coarse, unrefined clay with high iron oxide content. The clay which forms the bowl shows impurities, intentional pitting, and small stones peeking through the clay making for an interesting ceramic landscape...

Antique Japanese ceramic chawan (tea bowl) by the famous artist Otagaki Rengetsu (1791-1875) with a cream crackle glaze and bare foot. The sides of the bowl are inscribed with poetic calligraphy. Includes its own tomobako. Size: 2.5" H x 6" W (entire box) 4.5" x 6.5" x 6.5"
