A magnificent and detailed noh mask known as Shojo, which is used specifically for the play that contains the same name as the mask. Shojo originated in China as a mythical beast and was imported to Japan as a sake loving creature. In Noh theater, the play is performed for festive and auspicious occassions where the character is dressed in a colorful noh costume and wearing a red wig. Depending on the school of Noh, a jar with a ladle at times are used for the performance...

Japanese pair of Satsuma vases, beautifully decorated all over with scenes of in raised gold and colorful over glaze, motif is portraying the 18 arhats surrounding a kwan yin like form bodhisattva and Chinese sages. The vases portray characteristics seen in Yokohama Satsuma wares which were produced during the latter part of the Meiji Period. Age: Meiji Period, each vase is signed on bottom: Satsuma attributed to Hattori. Size: 9" high

A pair of hirobuta or trays used to place kimonos in, made from Cherry bark and paulownia. The style of using cherry bark to produce various objects is a distinct style seen in the Akita- Kaunodate region, where they are famous for the art. One piece contains a motif of deer and autumn grasses, while the other is a woman preparing silk fabric while staring at the moon...

A bronze brazier, also known as a hibachi. The workmanship of the brazier is intricate with one side showing a motif of Chinese stye lions mingling among peonies and the other, geese flying over reeds in a marsh. The sides are demon or beast like shaped heads with an insert to put rings to decorate the piece. Age: Meiji Period Size: Diameter 8" Height 13.25"

Antique Japanese two panel screen inlaid on both sides with mother of pearl and bone. The front has two beautiful scenes of birds and butterflies perched on flowering wisteria branches. The lower register has a phoenix and a dragon. The back side has scenes of butterflies flittering about. The lower region has panels of crashing waves.Meiji period, 1868-1912. It measures 37" tall 25.25" wide.

Japanese lacquer box form the Meiji/Taisho period circa 19th century. Decorated with gold flowering clematis vines on dark brown lacquer interior with gold rim inset and shallow tray. Accented with gilt fittings with paulownia decoration and ring handles. Dimensions: 5 1/2'' X 6 1/2'' X 5"

A four drawer lacquered gyosho tansu. The tansu has metal work advertising the medicine the peddling merchant was selling. The medicine, soge-nuki kusuri (written on the box) aids in removing splinters. The medicine was made by Shiota Nadaya Juzaemon who was based near Takabashi, Shinbashi in Osaka city. Antique Japanese rootwood burl kashibachi, or serving dish for sweets. It is hand-carved from a beautiful hardwood, all in one continuous piece, and has very interesting twists and gnarls throughout. Meiji period (1868-1912) Size: 12.72" height, 16.5" width

Japanese large seated gosho-ningyo doll, a boy child holding a silk scarf in two hands, he is seated with one chubby leg in front and one in back, he wears a little silk bib embroidered with a tortoise in gold thread, he has a hat on his head tied with a cord around his chin, Edo Period. Total size including hat: 13 1/2" high x 10" wide x 8" deep.

Beautiful kiri wood isho (clothing) tansu chest, originating from the Mikuni region of Japan. It features iron hardware with heart motifs, five drawers with hirute shaped handles and elegant backings and locks, and a bottom corner lockbox with two small drawers hidden inside. This is good-quality Noren used in the merchant's family of the Yamagata Shounai district for Edo period. The figure pattern of a wave and the plover means a good combination of attractive harmony. Merchants of Shonai thought about the harmony with local people to the first. And there was the harmony of a merchant and the farmer there. The good-quality hemp was dyed in Tsutsugaki.
