A Chinese lady's belt made of 16 mother of pearl discs each mounted with alternate appliques of butterfly and auspicious Chinese characters. One of the two end gilt silver clasps which are decorated with enamel characters is stamped "90" followed by characters. The quality of the multicolor enamel work as seen in the butterflies, is superb. size: 70 cm long. age: C. 1900. condition: One butterfly is missing and one disc has part of the Chinese character missing.

A young Maiko parts the curtains of an Okiya Tea-house entrance, perhaps on her way to training, or to begin a night of traditional entertainment through song and dance. Pigment and ink on silk in a fine brocade border with lacquered red wooden rollers. It is 25 x 78 inches (63.5 x 198 cm). There is some loss to the gofun in the center where it was obviously folded once before being mounted in its current state.

DESCRIPTION: A beautiful antique Chinese tobacco pipe, elegantly crafted from a long bamboo stem lacquered in red and black. The tip (bit) is carved from a pure white nephrite jade stone that is tapered and then flared to form the lip. The bowl and shank are crafted from silver metal, and bands of brass rings decorate each end. This pipe is in excellent condition and dates from the latter Qing Dynasty. DESCRIPTION: A red and gilt ink cake in the form of a turtle with a curled snake on its back. In ancient China, the tortoise and the snake were thought to be spiritual creatures symbolizing longevity. Both the front and back have been finely pressed in raised relief with gilt accents. One of the treasures of the Chinese scholar’s studio, this ink cake is in excellent condition, in its original box, and dates from the first quarter of the 20th C. or earlier.
