Beautifully plaited bamboo basket we think by Iizuka Sounsai of the famed Iizuka Family of reknown basket makers in the Taisho and Showa eras. It is not signed but exactly like the signed Kyokusho (Sounsai's art name) pc4 we have on the site. Circa 1920 – 1940. Iizuka Kyokusho was a brother of Iizuka Rokansai and Iizuka Hosai. He worked in Tokyo, and liked to work with slat bamboo. 12" tall by 10" wide. Great condition. Ask for shipping quote.

A magnificent set of five wooden bowls lacquered red with a net design enclosed in the original wooden box titled Shu-nuri Amime Hashiaraiwan dating from the first half of the 20th century. Excluding the lid each is 7.5 cm (3 inches) tall, roughly the same diameter at the rim, and all are in excellent condition. Repeated use of lacquer tends to see the black acquire a brown tinge. These remain jet black, and it is likely they have been virtually unused for the better part of a century.

Tatougami which was used at the pawnshop for wrapping pawned items. The name of the shop is "koyama Shichi-ten" and it has the shop's logo "小" in the square. It is a few layers of old washi (handmade paper) pasted together and painted with kakishibu (persimmon tannin) for strength and waterproof. Matcha bowl in clay decorated with two hare, partly glazed.
A fine contrast between the unglazed foot, which retains the raw color and rough, matt appearance of the clay, and the rest of the bowl, which is partly glazed with a brown layer with a smooth and shiny appearance. The body is underglazed with two running hares and a sayagata motif (derived frow swastika, a symbol of good fortune).
Unidentified mark on the foot.
