Pair of lacquered wooden panels inlaid with jade and soapstone. The first is decorated with antiques, the second with foliage and birds. The sculptures are of very good quality. The wooden frames as well as the lacquered backs are late 20th century but we believe that parts were recovered from older broken furniture and were reused here, as can be seen with the small wooden panels decorated with bats and mother-of-pearl inlays that are 19th century or earlier. Japanese shin hanga woodblock print by Toshi Yoshida (1911-1995) titled "Irozaki Morning" dated in the left margin Showa 36 (1961). The artists's black ink signature and red seal are at the lower right corner. The print is pencil-signed and titled in English in the lower margin. Paper size: nearly 11" x 15" (image: 9 9/16" x 13 3/16"). Never framed and in very good overall condition. The paper is slightly wavy.

Stunning, bold art deco Shigaraki wood-fired ceramic plate. Full of feldspar or long life stones unique to Shigaraki clays. Some kiln scars made during firing but the glaze has oozed out of the crack in the back indicating a natural firing scar. Diameter: 20". Great condition. Ca. 1970

Pair of hard porcelain pheasants covered with "famille rose" enamels, gilt details. "compagnie des indes" style. Although the style is Chinese from the 18th century, these are late copies Probably Chinese work from the 20th century, perhaps from the Republican period. The enamels are beautiful and thick, some details are gilded. Base unglazed, no mark. Good condition, except the beak of a pheasant broken and badly restored . Height: 29cm

Chinese hongmu hardwood table-top curio display shelf of very fine quality. This wonderful piece has carved and pierced trim and case work, much like the large antique etageres, having a pair of doors and a small drawer with raised panels. A finely carved lime box, its body in the form of a cone surmounting a flaring cylinder, decorated with three levels of an elaborate geometric design which is changing at each level. The stopper itself is decorated with two human heads back to back surmounting the neck adorned with a necklace. A bone spoon and a bone point are attached to the stopper, the link adorned with wood beads and tiny old glass beads. Fine age patina. Indonesia, Timor island. Height: 16.5 cm. Very good condition.

The mouse or the rat are both referred indistinctly by the term nezumi in Japanese. It is a zodiac sign and a symbol of wealth.
