Impressive press moulded Kaki glaze bottle with Nukie decoration made by Hamada Shinsaku around 1990-1991.

Born in 1929 as second son of Hamada Shoji, Hamada Shinsaku continued the family tradition of the world recognized Mashiko pottery.

This is a Rikyu doll, one of the Hakata clay doll made in the Fukuoka, Japan. Rikyu (Sen Rikyu) is a 16th century influential tea master who perfected the Cha-no-yu, way of tea. He served two historically powerful figures, Nobunaga (Oda) and Hideyoshi (Toyotomi), and eventually being forced to commit Seppuku by Hideyoshi. HAIL LOTUS SUTRA

Edo period, Japan. H 13.5 cm (5.31in).

Aged wooden 'Butsugu' as a gold-foiled Buddhist altar equipment, similar to a presence like 'ikon' (Western religious painting on panel) of traditional Japanese Buddhist art piece. The seven kanji characters written in Indian ink pronounced as "Na-m-myo-ho-ren-ge-kyo" as a whole mean "I devote myself (embrace) to the teachings of the Lotus Sutra.". Aged deterioration as is as seen.

The natural ash glaze gradates from a light-glossy grey on one side to a blueish grey on the other. The foot of the bowl is unglazed at the base and shows traces of ferrous-rich clay in the form of an orangish hue. The mouth of the piece is somewhat oblong giving it an attractive shape and the rough texture and ash deposits in places give this bowl a weighty presence.
