Layer upon layer of lacquer has been carved with scrolling designs revealing the depth of the surface in a style known as Guri by Suwa Sozan I enclosed in a wooden box titled Guri Kobon. Blue-glazed porcelain carp fish, a Korean scholar’s water dropper. The carp was regarded as a symbol of endurance and never-ceasing ambition - a good example for a calligrapher. The two small holes let out the drops of water needed to make fluent ink out of the hard and dry inkstone surface. Joseon dynasty, probably late 19th century. Width "3/ 7.5 cm, height "1/ 2.7 cm.
