A very versatile and innovative artist, Sakata Jinnai produces pieces such as the vase seen here in his easily recognizable trademark style. Many of his pieces are earthy and primal in compositions, often inlaid with gold or partially painted in “makie” using various lacquers for dramatic effect. Waves and contours also feature prominently in his work; inspired, he says, by cosmic energies and architectures of the universe. Sakata very actively exhibits his pieces and looks for interesting c...

Intricately carved clay adorned with a complex and multi-layer Oribe glaze, this piece is one of the best I have encountered by this talented and multifaceted artist. Though Oribe dates back to the 15th century, Tsukamoto has managed to keep it fresh and engaging for his many fans.

A native of the city of Toki in Gifu Prefecture, from 1977 he studied under Harukiyo Nonaka and was trained in the techniques of Shino ware. A year later he graduated from Aichi Prefectural Se...

Oribe is a visual style named after the late-16th-century tea master Furuta Oribe (1544-1615). Typically, black or green glazes are applied to asymmetrical clay bodies and light-colored windows are created using feldspar. These high-contrast areas then act as a canvases upon which abstract, minimalistic, and often naturalistic themes are painted.

Unmistakably modern, this unique water jug used for tea ceremony (mizusashi) pushes the bounds of traditional Oribe into new territory by...

Traditional Japanese art tends to be timeless and inspiring in form, however, occasionally lacking in diversity and innovation. That is why artists who can incorporate centuries of experiential knowledge and technique into producing new and interesting forms are oh so valued. Though this Bizen jar fits into the category of mizusashi, a vessel central to tea ceremony that holds fresh water, it seems to transcend this narrow category and stands as an independent art object all its own....
