Metal vase, probably copper, covered with green enamel, partly cloisonné with silver wire and partly "musen" (without wire), chrome metal borders. Stylized rose decoration. Ando's mark struck in the metal below the bottom edge. Good condition. Height 21cm.

$300.00 Flower vase with angular shoulder and angular hip, slightly curving in on the sides and standing on a bamboo node foot. Heavy but fine gray stoneware that turned reddish brown upon firing, covered with a celadon green glaze with curved striations made by tracing with his finger. The places where the glaze is scraped back to the stoneware, the clay turned red-brown during firing. Neck covered in cream-colored glaze, inside brown speckled glaze, all typical for Mashiko.

sold, thank you Grain rises majestically on the surface of this pale vase by pioneering female potter Suwa Sozan II enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Mugi-mon Hanaire. It is 15 cm (6 inches) diameter 34 cm (13-1/2 inches) tall and in excellent condition.
Suwa Sozan (1852-1922) was born in Kutani country, present day Ishikawa prefecture, where he initially studied before moving to Tokyo in 1875. Over the next 25 years he would gravitate between Tokyo and Kanazawa, working at various kilns... Finely cast five-point vajra (or dorje), made of bronze, with nice dark green patina. Tibet, early 19th century. Length: 12.4 cm. Very good condition.
