A beautifully carved cinnabar round box depicting a sage and his attendant walking under a pine tree in a waterfront scene. We date this box to mid-Qing Dynasty, 18th century. The box is in very good antique condition, with some expected minor loses and small chips, parts of the rims are retouched. This large Chinese scale has metal balance beams and shallow metal bowls. The scale fits into an ornately carved red and black lacquer wooden case which is slightly domed and has its original copper band closure. There is some wood chip loss around what was the hole for the string which allowed the case to be hung up for storage. Dating from the 1800's the braided cords which attach the shallow bowls to the metal balance beam appear to be replacement cords...

A pair of deeply carved Chinese cinnabar lacquer trays, with flower petal edges, the surfaces carved with foliate imagery such as peaches, pomegranates, citron, persimmon, and berries. Similar pieces can be seen from the 15th/16th century. Most likely this pair dates from the early 20th century.

The cover, with slightly convex top, intricately carved with four figures (two standing and two seated) in garden landscape with architectural structures and tall hills in the background. The carved flower motif on the sides of the cover also appearing on the sides of the bottom.
