One of the "four treasures of the scholar’s studio," this striking scholar’s brush would have been used for calligraphy or painting. This attractive, well made brush dates from the early 20th C. A large natural wood lacquered brush pot with a natural burl forming in the center. The base of the pot is fairly thick. Age: late Ming. Size:H.22.5cm. L.26.5cm. W.at the base. 15.5cm. Condition. Some minor old repairs. Three old clips ,two on the rim and one on the base (see photos),possibly added during construction.

A quite large bamboo brush pot, all around deeply carved with warriors among a pagoda landscape. Condition: the separately carved volute foot with losses. One warrior with missing arm (see picture no.6), few cracks. Dimension: 18.5 cm high, diameter: c. 13.1 cm.

Large Natural Chinese rootwood brush pot, made of wonderful heavy hardwood burl. Stunning organic shape that truly looks as if its alive. Heavy in weight (solid). Republic Period. Size: 15 1/4" high x 11 1/2" wide x 8" wide.

DESCRIPTION: A Chinese scholar’s calligraphy brush, the brush crafted with natural bristles encased in a horn ferrule. These are secured with a silver band to a pitted green jade handle inscribed with archaic characters and terminating in a round knob. A quality, well made brush in excellent condition, most likely dating to the latter Qing Dynasty to early republic Period. DIMENSIONS: 9 ¼” long (23.5 cm).

DESCRIPTION: A large Qing Dynasty artist’s calligraphy brush fashioned from wood and carved in a naturalistic design. The long black bristles are attached to a bulbous ferrule with the handle carved in a design reminiscent of bamboo leaves. This is a substantial, sturdy brush that shows usage wear and minor splitting on the handle. DIMENSIONS: 17 ¼” long (43.8 cm).

The tip of the handle is pierced for hanging. A very nice old brush, good for display in large brush pots; 19th C., normal wear as would be expected. DIMENSIONS: 16” long (41 cm).
