The mother lying on a cushion plays with her child, her legs crossed and her mutilated foot, her "lotus bud" ostentatiously stretched out. The attitude is provocative and cheerful. The 2 characters are positioned on a large square base, thick and heavy in black hard stone veined with brown. The use of this object escapes us, perhaps it is one of the 4 weights for large carpets, as was customary in India...

Budai is the Chinese "Père Noël" ,the Japanese calls him Hoteï. He carries toys in a big bag and distributes them to children who adore him and are sometimes represented at his side. The god is seated, his half-open robe reveals his large belly, a symbol of his generosity. He holds his rosary in his hand. Oddly enough his big bag is missing. It is sculpted from a beige steatite ( soap stone) stained with pink, on the skull appear red veins of the stone...

A set of 2 Antique QING DYNASTY Chinese hand carved CRYSTAL SCULPTURES, 19th Century. One has 2 dangling rings, 1 on each side, as well as a beautiful FOO DOG on top. An authentic marble stele fragment depicting an Apsara, measuring 4-3/4" in height by 3-1/2" in width. The carving is very well done and the details are crisp. The surface retains its original patina. A very fine example, mounted on a custom stand (the base of the sculpture has been drilled with a hole to accommodate the shaft). This is a diminutive portrayal of a crowned Buddhist figure, most likely a Bodhisattva, dating to circa the 6th century AD, Northern Qi dynasty. Note that the nose and areas of the forehead are darker than the rest of the stone, indicating that they have been rubbed by the hands of worshippers over the centuries, creating a "sweat stain" darkening of the stone...

Antique Chinese soapstone carving of a seated arhat. Likely Pindola Bharadvaja sometimes called Ajita. Binduluoshe Zunzhe, the Long Eyebrow Arhat, Changme Luohan. This Pindola is the leader of the 18 Arhats and his long eyebrows represent longevity, seniority and leadership. In this representation he is also holding a small pagoda which is similar to another arhat but the long eyebrows identify him. In addition, the artist allowed himself to cheat by abnormally moving the left ear too close to the eye so that, seen from the front, the face is balanced...
