Size: 5 7/8"H 4 1/2L 2 1/2" D Republic Period, circa 1930s A delicately cast miniature statue of a Buddhist monk, standing on a circular base, holding his robe with both hands. Gilt bronze. China, Tang Dynasty period. Height: 66 mm. The statue is nicely mounted on a custom plexi stand. Very good condition.

Known as mingqui in Chinese, these figures were of servants, soldiers (in male tombs) and attendants such as dancers and musicians, with many no doubt representing courtesans. In burials of people of high rank there may be soldiers and officials as well.

SOLD An antique Chinese seal chop of soapstone with an image of Hotei. Chinese seals are used with red ink or cinnabar paste (zhusha). A seal in an East is a general name for printing stamps and impressions which are used in lieu of signatures in personal documents, office paperwork, contracts, art, or any item requiring acknowledgement or authorship. The process started in China and soon spread across East Asia.
