Large Chinese Song Dynasty Painted Pottery Tile of a Warrior
This rare and unusual pottery tile depicts an armoured warrior. It was made during the Song Dynasty (AD 960 - 1279). It is made from a grey pottery that has been "cold painted" in a base coat of white pigment on top of which have been applied various different coloured pigments. The stylized vase is composed of a filiform dragon whose head can be seen from the front. The box opens with a lid pierced with 2 holes to receive a retaining wire, so you could open the lid by making it sink without losing it. Chinese work. We do not know what the use of such boxes was...

The cup and saucer were recovered from the wreck of the Dutch East India Company ship "De Geldermalsen", which sank in 1751 near Java. The recovered pieces from the wreck are now referred to as "The Nanking Cargo".
