A rare and beautiful kiri (paulownia) wood tansu from the Matsumoto region of Japan. The tone and texture of the wood grain pairs nicely with the elaborate iron hardware. Its drawers pull open with sturdy iron "mokko" melon style handles with large incised backplates. Two drawers towards the bottom of the piece secure into place with a short locking bar. Antique Japanese suzuri bako, or calligraphy box, made from keyaki (zelkova) hardwood with hand-forged iron hardware. The top of the box is hinged with a large, shallow compartment. The front has two small drawers with iron rings pulls. This box would have once been used for storing ink stones and other calligraphy articles.

A spectacular black lacquered wooden sign carved with bold characters over a gold gilded carp swimming through a torrent of waves dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. It is in fine condition, with only minor marks typical of age. It measures 4 feet (121 cm) long, 14 inches (35 cm) wide and is 1-1/2 inches (3.5 cm) thick at the frame edge.
