SOLD. Standing Sho-Kannon Bosatsu, the hands forming the gassho adoration mudra and a small kebutsu (lit. transformed Buddha) of a seated Amida Buddha at the front of the crown, sculpted in relief from a gray-hued volcanic stone. Late-Edo Period ca. 1825. Very minor old loss. Traces of polychrome.
Height: 51 cm A distinctively rendered Sho-Kannon stone, with a notably good face and in excellent condition.

sold Momoyama to early Edo period made, little distorted half cylinder ki-Seto (yellow Seto) chawan with a great wabi-sabi atmosphere, rarely seen on ki-Seto items. Ki-Seto is said to have been the outcome of the attempts of potters to recreate Chinese celadon wares. A fortunate mistake, for a new ware was born. The ash glaze looks like deep-fried tofu and has been given the name aburaage-de. Almost all Ki-Seto wares are serving utensils - exept some few tea bowls...

Early- to mid-Edo Period ca. 1700. Old loss, most notably to the tall courtly hat (eboshi) commonly seen on depictions of male Shinto gods. Heavy lichen accumulation.

It is decorated outside with the Imperial Seal of Japan, the Chrysanthemum Seal and inside with two stars. This design I have never seen on other tea bowls before. Little distorted half cylinder shaped (kutsugata) tea bowl with slightly flaring mouth made of light, unrefined Mino clay. The expertly thrown body was trimmed with a potters knife and covered with the typical green copper oxide glaze inside and outside... Japanese Edo period woodblock print by Yoshitoshi (1839-1892) depicting Nikki Danjo Naonori changing into a rat from the series "One Hundred Ghost Stories of China and Japan" (Wakan hyaku monogatari ) published by Daikoku-ya Kinnosuke (Kinjiro) in 1865.
