A very rare piece of lacquerware, comprising a big container with lid in the center and twelve narrow containers around it, each with a stopper in the shape of a nat (good spirit)and decorated with the Burmese zodiac. Made in the Pagan State, ca. late 19th to early 20th century. H. 31 cm , Diameter 28 cm. Condition: very good, with expected age wear.

DESCRIPTION: In Burma (now called Myanmar), one of the most honored and beautifully decorated ceremonial pieces was the box that held the many gold lacquered sheets of Buddhist manuscripts, called the Kammawasa. These sheets are read aloud at monastic assemblies, and topics covered could include formalities for the ordination of monks and the bestowal of their robes, the consecration of an ordination hall, celebrating the festival of the full moon, or other such instructions...

A carved sandstone Khmer relief fragment in (Mahayana Buddhist) Angkor Wat style depicting a Buddha head under two parasols, flanked by a pair of fans and mounted on stand. This item was carved in what is now Cambodia, probably during the reign of King Jayavarman VII (1181–1215 AD). Condition - there are chips, the edges are damaged (please view enlargements) and there is weathering and associated iron oxidation to the surface. 56cm long; 35cm wide; 18cm deep...

Description:

A wood panel depicting the flying Apsaras was in good condition.
Obviously a part of building structures, this ancient wood carving of the Apsaras was well rendered in animated posture.
The wood texture was revealed by enduring age.

Date: 13th/14th century.

Provenance: Nepal.

Finely cast with good patina. Cambodia, 12th/13th century. H. 7 cm (the figure). Size including the stand 11,5 cm. Excellent condition.
