A religious temple painting of a yellow buddha surrounded by 10 deity attendants. Seated atop a lotus throne, the buddha makes a gesture of reassurance, abbaya mudra, with his right hand, and a gesture of liberality with his left hand, varada mudra. There is an inset inscription on the left. Chosun Dynasty 17th/18th century. It measures 50" wide by 54" tall by 2.5" deep. Incense marks throughout. Previously featured in the 2008 Arts of Pacific Asia show.

A very unusual Korean chest with a complex network of geometric designs on its front, top, and sides, brass hardware incised with floral motifs, two front doors with large brass lock and working key, opening to a beautiful interior of persimmon laminate front drawers. A lacquered and iron bound round lidded box called a kubi-oke made to carry the head of a man taken in battle or that of a man after committing ritual suicide for offering to the lord. It is 13 inches (33 cm) diameter, 11-1/2 inches (29 cm) tall with large handles from which it could be carried on a pole. There is mouse damage on one part of the bottom, but has not eaten through to the inside.

Stunning Antique Japanese choba tansu (merchant's chest) from the Matsumoto Area in Japan. Adorned with a red lacquer Keyaki hardwood frame, along with Keyaki (elm) front panels of a golden honey original finish. Highly functional design with many drawers of various sizes, including an unusual long shallow one below a set of sliding door panels with a shelved interior.

Great original condition with fine details. Meiji period (1868-1912)

Antique Chinese framed painting of the mythological figure Zhong Kui, commander of 80,000 demons, vanquisher of evil spirits, and guardian of households. He appears to be controlling an unhappy looking green demon with a turtle shell, sometimes called Shui Gui. Two small bats fly just next to the calligraphy on the lefthand side, with red chop by the artist.

A very unusual Katana held in a saya (scabbard) made to look like a gnarled branch cut into a poor man’s cane. When pulled a spring-loaded mechanism releases two iron flanges creating a very effective tsuba hand guard. The blade is unsigned, measuring Nishaku nissun nibu {26-1/2 inches (67.3 cm)}. The spherical body consisting of two hemispheres, locked together by a bayonet fitting. Each half reticulated with five roundels, two of them stylized shou characters and inlaid with floral motifs in mixed metal. The insert of ring gimbals with the central bowl is missing. Brilliantly colored riders charge into rushing water on the gold leaves of this 18th century six panel screen relating the famous charge at the Battle of Uji Bridge. Tatsuna and Kagesue charge forward into the waters riding toward the enemy lined up on the opposite shore of the Uji River; the skeleton of the bridge visible in the back-ground.
