Antique Stones Japan
SOLD Nyoirin Kannon Bosatsu in characteristic seated pose of royal ease, sculpted in relief from a gray-hued igneous stone. Clearly dated to the fourth year of the Anei Era (1775), late-Edo Period. Minor old loss.
Height: 48 cm Large Chinese late Qing Guangxu period cylindrical form censer decorated in underglaze blue against a white porcelain ground with a faint blue-green tint with a pair of four-clawed dragons chasing a flaming pearl above waves. The interior is glazed while the base is unglazed. 7 1/2" high x 8" diameter. Late 19th to early 20th century. Very good overall condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs. There is a small amount of staining to the interior.

The condition is good, some of the enamel colors on the family Crest area is slightly rubbed off from usage.

The inside of the bowl has a gilt shou symbol (Chinese character for longevity), lined in red and surrounded by five red lucky bats. The outside of the bowl has a mille fleur style enamel with many multi-colored flowers and other plants over a black enamel background. Red Guangxu mark on bottom.

already sold Cylinder shaped (hanzutsu) tea bowl made of light, fine, unrefined Mino clay. Shape and style (note the trimmed walls) make it appear contemporary with the late Oribe bowls.
