Chinese Northern Wei Dynasty Pottery Horse with Female Rider

This attractive model of a horse and rider was made during the Northern Wei Dynasty (AD 386 - 534). It is made from a grey pottery that has been cold painted in a creamy-white pigment on top of which have been applied other coloured pigments. Note the detail of the female rider's facial features and hairstyle.

Very old Karatsu Chawan (early Edo), slightly deformed rare wan type.

It is thrown on a wheel from coarse unrefined iron baring clay and has tasteful colours.

This is Sashiko kimono used in Kaga area Kanazawa for the Meiji period. As for this, cotton is dyed with a natural indigo plant. The cotton is spun by hand. This is a very good texture. This is Tsutsugaki Noren used in the rich merchant's family of the Shonai, Yamagata district for Edo period. It is a characteristic of Edo period that a motif has dynamism.
