Sold to USA - November 2013 售至美国 - 2013年11月 A rare and finely carved 18th Century Chinese "honey yellow" soapstone Luohan, probably Damo (Bodhidarma). On the back is carved "made by Shang Jun".
Condition - very good. This item was originally set with semi-precious stones but, with the exception of one white stone on the collar behind the neck, all are now missing; there are natural "flaws" intrinsic to the stone which pre-date the carving. There have been no repairs and there has been no restoration.

It is a painting of wonderful yuzen dye. Tsutsugaki is done by a considerably exact technology. It is a wonderful masterpiece of Edo at latter term. SOLD. Head of Jizo Bosatsu sculpted from andesite. Early-Edo Period ca. 1650. Old loss and overall softening of the lines and contours.
Height: 20.5 cm A sizable, boldly hewn Jizo head with significant age. The detacheable central Tirthankara surrounded by other Tirthankaras, two elephants holding his princely parasol, his throne supported by two lions. On the back there is a lengthy inscription, holding the date 1674 in Samvat, which is 1617 in the Western calendar. The shrine is inlaid all over with silver. H. 28 cm, W. 19 cm. Condition: some old damage and an old repair to the thinly cast back of the stand. Otherwise in wonderful original condition.
