A elegant lacquerware for monastery use. Made in Kyaukka, in the lower Chindwin District in Burma, made from woven matting and coiled bamboo and lacquered in black and red. This piece has six sections. These original Kyaukka pieces are difficult to come by. Size: H. 38cm. W. 38cm. Condition: No repairs. Very good condition.

Antique Wooden Buddhist Temple Bell (mokugyo), dating from the end of the Edo Period. 15 x 15 cm.

Handcarved and made of one piece of wood. The Buddhist Mokugyo has a nice sound and symbolizes a japanese carp kingyo. It has been used for more than two hundred years in a Buddhist Temple in Gifu. It was once given as a gift to a member of our family, who was a famous ambassador. Lacquered with Urushi.

It represents the aura of true wabi-sabi with its spoils of time.

Chinese Qing dynasty Guangxu period cylindrical form rouleau vase with a narrow columnar neck and cupped rim, decorated overall in gilt with cranes flying among stylized lucky clouds set against a powder blue ground. A band of lappets extends around the circumference of the base. The angled shoulder is encircled by a band of bats and scrolling foliage. This is a 150 years old tea bowl of Kyoto. It has a very teasteful handpainting of wild chrysanthenum and an antique crackle glaze.

It dates from the Meiji Period and it is suitable for Nodate (open air) tea ceremony.

On the original wooden box is written in kanji letters "wild chrysanthenum".

A finely carved Chinese agate in the form of a popular motif often seen in Tibet which is the windhorse. The use of Tibetan motifs in Chinese arts began during the Ming dynasty with patronage of the Tibetan high lamas and continued onwards into the Qing Dynasty. The windhorse is carrying a pecha or sutra text, a signature motif often found on windhorses. The stylized ribbons and the waves are done in the Chinese style.
