Large Chinese Northern Wei Dynasty Painted Pottery Saddled Horse with Oxford TL Test
This impressive pottery horse was made during the latter part of the Northern Wei Dynasty (AD 386 - 534). It is made from a buff-coloured pottery and is quite "heavily-potted". Its surface has been cold-painted in a creamy-white pigment, good traces of which still remain. The horse stands upright and alert. On its back is a large integral saddle. Old hand carved wooden ink pad box circa first half 20th century. I think this is probably a Yao item, but as I purchased it in a Bai ethnic minority market in Yunnan, over 20 years ago, we’ll assume it is Bai. This has a floral pattern carved on the lid. The ink has long ago dried up. Nice natural patina. L: 7.2cm/2.9in x W: 5.8cm/2.3in x H: 3.2cm/1.3in.

This attractive small covered jar was made during the 13th / 14th Century (Song / Yuan Dynasty). It is quite "heavily-potted" for its type and is coated inside and out in a pale Qingbai-type glaze. The glaze falls short of the sturdy foot and the underside of the cover also remains unglazed. This very rare pottery figure was made during the Tang Dynasty (AD 618 - 906). It is made from a fairly highly-fired creamy-white pottery with features picked out in cold-painted red and black pigments. The figure is prostrate with knees and elbows on the ground possibly paying obeisance to a dignitary or emperor. Note especially the details of the facial features... This rare and unusual painted pottery figure was made during the Northern Qi Dynasty (AD 550 - 577).
