$650.00 Slightly distorted shoe shaped - Kutsugata tea bowl with a rounded brim, made of light, coarse, unrefined Mino clay during the Edo Period (1603-1868). The expertly thrown body was trimmed with a potter's knife in its lower part. In the style of Oribe-Kuro bowls the bowl was covered with a black glaze which was not achieved by hikidashi (pulling the red hot bowl from the kiln) but by adding cobalt the the iron oxide glaze. An Ancient wooden casket for Buddhist ritual implements lacquered black and decorated with lotus flowers in silver and gold on scrolling vines with an inscription beneath stating it was donated in the New Year of Kenmu 2 (1334). The exterior with a light Café-au-lait variation of the brown “Batavia” glaze (Batavia being the Dutch name for the VOC shipping harbour, today's Jakarta). Yongzheng, early 18th century, the base with a shop mark. Diameter of saucer "4 ½ / 11.5 cm, height of cup "1 2/3/ 4.3 cm. Condition: the cup with three chips to the rim and foot rim, two of them with old repairs (cf. pics).
