Spoils of Time
$685 Japanese, Edo period, carved and painted wood Noh mask. Depicting Otafuku (popularly known as Okame), boldly and adeptly carved with full, deep, expressive features. Painted white all over, blackened teeth as was the custom, red lips, and black hair in distinct, fine brush strokes for affect. The hollowed out verso displaying the tool marks of the unknown artisan. Surfaces moderately distressed and with much patina from use and handling. Length, 8 1/4 inches.

$1,450 A rare Korean folk art, turtle form, carved wood candle stand base. Hints of once vibrant polychrome stain or paint decoration accentuate parts of the turtle’s shell, front feet, face, eyes and apparently teeth. So perhaps it depicts a mythical turtle. Subsiding water is suggested by a decorative detail bridging the top and bottom of the beak tip of the turtle’s mouth. An aperture of square section on the turtle’s back supported the candle holder. $475 An Edo period kake-suzuribako (scroll calligraphy box). Iron hardware all in place. Lock face and key but lock works mostly gutted. Original tray with liner retained. Wood surface naturally distressed from use but with expected, even patina with all the accompanying charm. A smoothly finished zelkova (keyaki) may be used for the primary wood, and sugi (cedar) for the aromatic secondary wood. Length, 14 1/4 inches. Depth, 9 1/2 inches. Height, 9 3/4 inches.

$1,100.00 A large bronze vase in olivec-olored textured orange-peel finish signed Gyokuho and inscribed as having been made to celebrate the 10th year of the founding of the modern Tokyo Stock Exchange, which means the vase was cast in 1959. It is 27.5 cm (11 inches) diameter, 36.5 cm (14-1/2 inches) tall and weighs 5.5 kg (12 pounds). It is in excellent condition.

$395.00 A shell-shaped bowl of raw burnt kalium clay glazed inside and about the rim with white decorated with blue crabs and surmounted by an iron glazed octopus dating from the later 19th to early 20th centuries. It is 12.5 x 15 x 8 cm (5 x 6 x 3-1/2 inches) and is in overall excellent condition.

$1,200.00 Two long eared Rabbits, one rising up on the back of the other, together form an adorable incense burner dating from the later 19th to early 20th centuries. Together they are roughly 22 x 14 x 16.5 cm (9 x 5-1/2 x 6-1/2 inches) and are in overall excellent condition, with some wear on the patina revealing the bright yellow bronze where they rest on the table evidencing age.

$495.00 A set of five narrow Teacups covered in Shino glaze by important contemporary artist Suzuki Goro enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Shino Yunomi. They are roughly 5.5 cm (2 inches) diameter, 8 cm (3-1/4 inches) tall and in perfect condition.
Suzuki Goro has a list of shows and prizes too lengthy to go through, but the highlights are, Nitten National Art Exhibition, Nihon Shin Kogei Ten (New National Crafts Exhibition), Nihon Gendai Kogei Ten (National Modern Crafts Exhibit... A black glazed ceramic slab engraved with a bird mounted in the original signed frame by Yagi Kazuo of Sodeisha fame. It is 21.5 x 13.5 cm (8-1/2 x 5-1/2 inches). The frame is 39 x 31.5 x 5.5 cm (15 x 12-1/2 x 2 inches). There is some moisture staining on the cloth backing in the frame, otherwise is in excellent condition.
