This attractively-shaped pottery jar with its wide body and narrow neck was made during Warring States period (475 - 221 BC). It is made from a relatively highly-fired fine-grained grey pottery and has a burnished surface, very smooth to the touch. Surrounding the shoulder is a decorative band of incised geometric patterns and around the waist is a raised band. In places on the surface are traces of red and white "cold-painted" pigment... Two different male Mandarin squares, both glued on cardboard, dating around 1900. A back insignia in gold and silver metallic threads, couched on violet silk, with appliqued paradise flycatcher bird, denoting the ninth civil rank. The full cheeks, engaging, full-lipped smile, dimpled chin, and eyes that swerve up at the sides suggest an outgoing, engaging personality. The "caterpillar" eyebrows are painted high on a full forehead and the black hair parted in the middle has three loose strands on each side. An ivory netsuke depicting Shoki, the legendary demon hunter, depicted in a moment of rest. Near his knee, an overturned bowl symbolizes an interrupted meal, while his left hand firmly holds the katana.
An Oni, furtively tries to cut Shoki's long beard with a blade. The signature is engraved on the vase under the base.
