Nice old antique black lacquered bamboo and wood box from Cambodia circa 1950 or earlier. This part of a collection I acquired almost 20 years ago. Khmer lacquer is quite rare, not many crafts survived the Khmer Rouge era, and is a lost art. Some wear and restoration as to be expected but no major damage. D: 5cm/7.8in and H: 10.5cm/4.1in.

Chawan, tea bowl to be used in the tea ceremony, of distorted oval shape (kutsu or clog, or shoe-shape). Thick cream-colored stoneware that turned red during firing in the unglazed area, covered with a translucent greenish ash glaze that collected in the bottom and around the rim and is very thin around the sides. The sides are ‘rough’, giving a look into the clay.

A cigarette case made of iron, partially damascened in different golds and silver, inspired by the famous sculpture of the American artist James Earle Fraser (1876-1953) "End of the Trail", which he designed in the late 19th C. The cup and saucer were recovered from the wreck of the Dutch East India Company ship "De Geldermalsen", which sank in 1751 near Java.
