Today I would like to introduce another talented potter living outside of the traditional potting centers. This is a beautiful Nezumi Shino (Gray Shino) chawan by Sagae Eimei, and comes enclosed in the original signed wooden box. This has an immediacy which speaks of our era, yet is based firmly in the pottery of the Momoyama period. It is 12.5 cm (5 inches) diameter, 9.5 cm (3 inches) tall and in excellent condition.
Sagae Eimei was born in Yamagata prefecture in 1949...

Karatsu pottery is one of most desired pottery type in Japan based in Karatsu, Saga Prefecture since 15th century.
It is made from high in iron clay often decorated with an iron-based underglaze, giving an earthy and natural feeling to the fired items.

An antique Japanese 3 section Isho Tansu (Kimono storage chest) made entirely of Kiri (Paulownia) wood. Original hand cast bronze hardware including the Warabite style handles. Top section has two sliding doors behind which lies a half split level shelf with three side by side drawers below. The center section features 3 drawers and the bottom section has 2 larger drawers for spacious clothes storage...

An antique Japanese Ikebana basket in a cylindrical form woven in a herringbone pattern. 6 vertical bamboo supports with flared feet connected with a lucky turtle weave at the base and a woven coin half the way up the side. The turtle would represent longevity and the coins would symbolize prosperity. With a star crossed base and two ring handles.

An antique Japanese Ikebana bamboo basket in a cylindrical form mimicking a Gourd. It was woven in a vertical stitch pattern juxtapose a visually lesser diagonal weave. The artist used the thin and medium bamboo strips to contrast and undulate texture and movement within the basket. The base forms a hexagonal circle with a six point star pattern at the bottom.

An antique Japanese bronze Koi (carp) fountain. Depicting a carp breaching the water surface as it attempts to swim up a waterfall. The casting symbolizes true perseverance and tenacity in achieving ones personal goals. Fine details show on the fins, the scales, the barbels and sun-like designs just above the gills.

An antique Japanese Kotansu (personal storage chest) made of Kiri (Paulownia) wood. All original hand forged iron hardware including the Kakute style handles which mimics the angular square lock plates of the drawers. The six drawers of varying sizes allows for functional organizing and spacious storage. Side handles allow one to carry the tansu from room to room.

Made in 2 sections, the upper portion has two sets of sliding doors with spacious storage while the bottom section has 9 drawers, a pair of sliding doors and a pair of hinged doors that provided storage and organizing of daily Japanese culinary tools, gadgets and utensils...

Fudo-Myo (Skt. Acala Vidyaraja) standing upon a rock-form plinth, the left hand holding a rope (symbolizing the catching and binding-up of distracting demons) and the right hand positioned to hold a demon-slaying sword, now lost. Yosegi-zukuri joined-block wood construction, the eyes of inset crystal, finished in mineral-pigment polychrome and gilt, with decorative necklace in gilt-copper and colored glass, and arm, wrist, and ankle bracelets in gilt-copper. Mid-Edo Period ca. 1700...

Dai-Nichi Buddha seated upon a lotus-form plinth, the hands forming the chiken-in "knowledge fist" mudra characteristic of Kongoukai (Diamond World) Dai-Nichi Buddha depictions. Ichibori-zukuri single-block wood construction. Momoyama~early-Edo Period ca. 1600, possibly earlier. Minor old wood loss and insect damage, with traces of white gesso-like foundation and black lacquer remaining from the original lacquer and gilt finish.

Extra large Japanese Edo to Meiji period single section kaidan (step) tansu with six steps, three storage compartments of various sizes with sliding doors, and three fitted drawers. Original iron handcrafted hardware and dovetail construction. 19th century. 71 1/2” high x 68 1/2” wide x 35 1/2” deep. Very solid overall condition. There are typical signs of natural wear from use. The wood has some shrinkage and cracks from the Arizona dry climate...

Japanese mid-century sosaku hanga woodblock print depicting a horse in a stable by Kiyoshi Saito (1907-1997). Signed in black ink at the lower left and with the artist's red seal above. Unlimited edition dating circa 1960. Paper size: 11 1/2" x 17 1/8" (image: 10 1/8" x just over 15"). The print was never framed and is in very good overall condition and color with full margins. There is some waviness to the paper and a couple of the margin corners have creases.

A fabulous mid Edo period bronze brazier with satin luster made up of a basin supported by four small rabbits with two small gourd shaped handles suspended from a belt of archaic designs. The top is a large dome pierced with geometric designs known as incense clock patterns and featuring a large hinged circular opening in front. It is 22 cm diameter, 34.5 cm tall (8-1/2 x 13-1/2 inches) and in excellent condition...

Polylobed lacquer box (kobako) with chrysanthemum decoration. On the lid, maki-e lacquer decoration, a slight relief in the center of the two flowers. Sides in fundame and base in nashi-ji.

An antique vertical wall hanging made of velvet, partially cut and painted with ink and colors. Beautiful depiction of a watermill in a grove with two peasants. Original brocade border and printed cotton lining with hanging loops. Signed and sealed in the lower left corner. Condition: fine, scarce stained, partially faded, few traces of age. Dimension with border: c. 198 cm x 146 cm.

An antique Fubako, letter box, of a rarely seen design with a black ground having a flowing gold sprinkled pattern featuring wheel and wind/water designs in relief. There is also a lovely sprinkled design to the interior...
