On Hold A rare Chinese, black glazed, chicken-head ewer; Six Dynasties period, C4-5th.
As this handsome ewer shows, chicken-head ewers of the late 4th century to early 5th century are tall with expanding shoulders being the widest point of the vessel. The double stranded handle joins to the dish-shaped mouth with a dragon's head. The non-functioning, double chicken-head, spouts are tall and straight. The black glaze terminates above the flat base, which shows kiln-support marks.
