The dish has an unusual square form with indented corners and a raised almost vertical rim which suggests that it was probably intended to be used for the serving of sashimi, sliced raw fish. The background silk is a rich dark brown and the ornate floral display can be positioned either horizontally or vertically.

Around the rim of the plate are four galloping horses. The underside of the plate is decorated with three thin blue rings and a simple dot pattern.
