Antique Korean scholar's low table. Its top pair of panels are book matched of persimmon wood, with a boxwood frame. The inner compartment still shows traces of ink; The opposite compartment would hold brushes. The drawer has a wonderful persimmon cover that continues to the order of the low table. The low writing implement table has an inverted key fret leg and internal low shelf of boxwood.

A charred Ash Glazed Mizusashi water container by Kumano Kurouemon enclosed in the original signed wooden box. Glaze is crisp but grows quite liquid as it drips down the molten form. On the side in bold strokes is written "Sonomamani", or "Just as it is".

Nyonya wares are over-glaze polychrome enamelled porcelains made in Jingdezhen in the Kiangsi province of China for the Straits Chinese, or Babas, whose female counterparts are called Nyonyas, hence the term Nonya ware. Shotora Taisho, one of the 12 Heavenly Generals charged with protecting Yakushi Nyorai (Healing Buddha), sculpted from wood with joined-block construction (Jp. yosegi-zukuri) and finished in polychrome pigments with eyes of inset crystal, an ox head perched amid the dramatic up-do, standing upon a rectangular dais also of polychromed wood. Momoyama/early-Edo Period ca. 1600. Loss of mandorla and of attribute originally carried in the left hand as well as minor loss to the polychrome finish.

Here is one of the most important chawans of our collection: rounded wan shaped tea bowl with high foot of the bamboo node style in the typical O-Ido shape. The light, little coarse clay with enclosures is expertly thrown and full glazed - with the exception of the foot - with a transparent glaze of wood ash with some feldspar over a white engobe - in the style of Korean kohiki chawan (unglazed area on the outer wall is a typical feature found on many kohiki chawans).
