Antique Stones Japan
SOLD. Seated Hotei (Ch. Budai), commonly known as the Laughing Buddha, one of Japan's Shichifukujin (Seven Lucky Gods), an ogi (wish-granting fan) in the right hand and a small sack in the left, figuratively sculpted from sandstone. Late-Edo Period ca. 1850. Excellent condition. Overall lichen accumulation.
Height: 16.5 cm An exquisitely sculpted Hotei with impossibly tiny hands and feet, showing good age and in excellent condition. Uncommon. Chinese carved boxwood figurine depicting the Song poet and painter Su Dongpo dressed as a scholar and enjoying his ink stone. Fixed on a wooden base. Condition: fine, some patina and tiny stains. Dimension: total height: 18.1 cm.

A large porcelain vase by Miyanaga Tozan decorated with a garden scene of young pine growing up around a large stone brushed by Yamamoto Shunkyo and enclosed in a double wooden box signed by both artists. It comes with the pictured rosewood stand in a separate section in the box. The vase is 12 inches (31cm) tall 8 inches (20 cm) diameter and in excellent condition.

SOLD Japanese antique single section isho tansu (storage chest for clothing), made with all keyaki (elm) wood on drawer fronts, the sides and top are sugi (cryptomeria) wood and lacquered a deep reddish brown, nice iron hardware with warabite shaped drawer pulls, seven drawers of various sizes, Meiji Period.

SOLD A large shiwan (shekwan) sculpture of an Aesthetic riding a pomegranate red foo lion. The glaze is thick and glass-like with a natural crackle that only comes from age. The clay’s color and some ash residue (a good thing) indicate that this piece was fired in a dragon kiln about 5 - 15 miles upstream from Foshan.
